DOGE Budget Cuts Spark Government Shutdown Fears Amid GOP Divide

Washington, D.C. – Republican leaders are facing a critical challenge as they approach the March 14 government funding deadline. With President Donald Trump and Elon Musk pushing for Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) budget cuts, GOP lawmakers remain divided on how to balance fiscal responsibility and government stability.

The Funding Dilemma: GOP at a Crossroads

The key issue revolves around whether to fund federal agencies Trump aims to eliminate.

✅ Democrats demand full funding to avoid agency shutdowns.
✅ Republicans struggle to define a spending bill that Trump will approve.
✅ DOGE-driven cuts raise concerns about government efficiency.

House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune are looking to the White House for direction. Meanwhile, Trump expressed optimism on Truth Social:

“We are working very hard to pass a clean, temporary government funding bill. Let’s get it done!”

However, Republicans remain unsure whether Trump will support a “clean” bill if it includes funding for agencies he wants to dismantle.

    DOGE Cuts: A Divisive Strategy

Some Republican hardliners support enshrining DOGE’s cuts into the funding bill. However, GOP leaders of the House and Senate Appropriations Committees rejected this approach.

🔹 Sen. John Thune (R-SD): “We are reviewing White House requests, but the administration’s stance is clear.”
🔹 Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME): “We shouldn’t force DOGE cuts into a stopgap bill.”

Democrats, meanwhile, accuse Republicans of risking a shutdown:

🔵 Sen. Patty Murray (D-WA): “Republicans are walking away from negotiations.”
🔵 Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT): “They’re raising the risk of a shutdown.”

Republican-Only Plan? Risky Move for Johnson

Johnson is considering a Republican-only funding bill, but it carries serious risks:

⚠️ GOP conservatives refuse to fund programs DOGE has cut.
⚠️ Defense hawks demand increased military spending.
⚠️ Without bipartisan support, a GOP-only bill could fail.

🚨 Rep. Thomas Massie (R-KY): “I won’t fund programs that DOGE has identified as waste.”
🚨 Rep. Carlos Gimenez (R-FL): “We need more defense funding, not less.”

If Johnson’s Republican-only plan fails, he may have to return to negotiations with Democrats, putting Trump’s vision at risk.

Democrats’ Strategy: Hold the Line or Compromise?

For now, Democrats are keeping their strategy quiet. Some push for language restricting Trump’s power over spending, while others worry this could weaken their legal battles against him.

🔹 Rep. Tom Suozzi (D-NY): “Republicans control everything. They’ll be blamed for a shutdown.”
🔹 Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT): “Congress holds the power of the purse, not Trump.”

    What’s Next?

As March 14 approaches, the GOP remains divided, and Democrats hold their ground. The threat of a government shutdown looms. Will Trump’s budget cuts shape the future, or will Congress force a compromise?
