Los Angeles, CA – For the second day in a row, thousands of demonstrators took to the streets of downtown Los Angeles as part of the nationwide ‘Day Without Immigrants’ protest against the Trump administration’s immigration policies. The demonstrations, which also occurred in Orange County and other major U.S. cities, caused significant traffic disruptions.
Mass Demonstrations in Los Angeles and Southern California
Hundreds of protesters gathered outside City Hall in downtown Los Angeles on Monday, waving Mexican and American flags while holding signs advocating for immigrant rights. The march progressed through major intersections, blocking traffic on West Olympic Boulevard, South Figueroa Street, and Cesar Chavez Avenue.
By 1:15 PM, demonstrators had occupied parts of the 101 Freeway, leading the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) to issue warnings about severe traffic congestion.
In Santa Ana, another large group assembled outside the Santa Ana Courthouse and Civic Center Plaza, chanting against the administration’s crackdown on illegal immigration. Protesters also disrupted traffic in other Southern California cities, including San Diego and Riverside.
Nationwide Support and Business Closures
The ‘Day Without Immigrants’ movement extended beyond California, with similar protests in Texas, New York, and Illinois. Many businesses supported the movement by either closing for the day or granting employees paid time off to join the demonstrations, according to USA Today.
Trump Administration’s Crackdown on Immigration
Since returning to office, President Donald Trump has issued executive orders expanding ICE operations, increasing border security, and allowing immigration enforcement at schools and churches.
The White House has reported that immigration arrests have surged, with nearly 1,000 apprehensions per day. Critics argue that these policies violate civil rights and disproportionately target undocumented workers and families.
LAPD and Local Authorities Respond
While most protests remained peaceful, law enforcement closely monitored demonstrations to prevent potential escalations. Officials have urged commuters to seek alternative routes as further demonstrations are expected in the coming days.
